(High Mallow, Tall Mallow) Herbaceous biennial or perennial to 3 feet, native to Europe and Asia.  Flowers large, showy, purple with dark veins.  Excellent cutflower.  Bright-green leaves shot-through with purple, flowers loaded on plant, similarly variegated with dark venation.  The leaves and flowers of this herb, steamed or stewed, are good food. Traditional usage (TWM): gastric upset, ulceration, burns and wounds.  Plants prefer full sun to part shade and a moderately rich, moist but well-drained soil.    In the spring or early summer, scarify seed lightly on fine grit sandpaper and sow directly in the garden, or in pots or flats. Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart.
