Family: Mallow (Malvaceae)

Hardy to Zones 4 to 8

(High Mallow, Tall Mallow) Herbaceous biennial or perennial to 3 feet, native to Europe and Asia.  Flowers large, showy, purple with dark veins.  Excellent cutflower.  Bright-green leaves shot-through with purple, flowers loaded on plant, similarly variegated with dark venation.  The leaves and flowers of this herb, steamed or stewed, are good food. Traditional usage (TWM): gastric upset, ulceration, burns and wounds.  Plants prefer full sun to part shade and a moderately rich, moist but well-drained soil.    In the spring or early summer, scarify seed lightly on fine grit sandpaper and sow directly in the garden, or in pots or flats. Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart.

    The seeds you sent produced beautifully. As usual from you guys. I wanted to ask a question but can’t find the form- can the root of High Mallow be used interchangeably with Althea officinalis, medicinally?

      Hi Margaret, Thanks for your positive note. High mallow leaves and flowers are used in poulticing (see page 63 of “Growing Plant Medicine Vol 2” but the root is pretty fibrous in comparison to marshmallow, which is official. Richo
