(High Mallow, Tall Mallow) Herbaceous biennial or perennial to 3 feet, native to Europe and Asia. Flowers large, showy, purple with dark veins. Excellent cutflower. Bright-green leaves shot-through with purple, flowers loaded on plant, similarly variegated with dark venation. The leaves and flowers of this herb, steamed or stewed, are good food. Traditional usage (TWM): gastric upset, ulceration, burns and wounds. Plants prefer full sun to part shade and a rich, moist soil. Good drainage not necessary. In the spring or early summer, scarify seed lightly on fine grit sandpaper and sow directly in the garden, or in pots or flats. Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart.
