Family: Carrot (Apiaceae)
Hardy to Zones 3 to 9
Native to Europe. Herbaceous perennial flowering from 4 to 7 feet tall. Traditional usage (TWM): carminative. The leaf stems and leaves, harvested fresh and chopped, make an agreeably aromatic potherb, especially nice to flavor potato-leek soup. The aerial parts may be dried and rubbed through a screen to create seasoning flakes that may be used throughout the winter. Host for swallowtail butterflies. The plant prefers full sun to part shade and moist garden soils. Press seed into surface of soil fall or spring and keep moist until germination, which takes from 1 to 3 weeks. Thin or transplant to 2 feet apart.
