Family:  Gourd (Cucurbitaceae)

Annual making edible fruit in 60 days, maturing in 100 to 120 days

(Loki, Edible-fruited Bottle Gourd) Enthusiastic vine native to India. Lauki makes long, thin-skinned fruits that are harvested when young and popularly used in Indian cooking.  The culinary concept is to find a vegetable that is firm when cooked, and bland in taste, so that it may soak up as much spice as possible when used in the cooking.  That is how Indian people like to use it.  Traditional use:  Anticholesteremic, good for heart (especially when cooked with chiles), helps lower high blood pressure, high in Vit C and that good salt–potassium, Cultivation:  Make rich hills in the garden 10 feet apart.  Plant seeds “ears up” and thin to 3 best seedlings per hill and trellis.  Make sure to pick the fruits when they are young, tender and tasty.
