(Swiss Chard, Red Chard, Rhubarb Chard) Biennial cultigen related to the beet. Deeply savoyed leaves and crimson stems typify this garden standby. Young leaves are sweet and excellent for adding color and loft to salads. Older leaves are nutrient dense and hold well in hot weather, making them a reasonable spinach substitute. Plant prefers regular garden conditions including rich soil, sun and water. Direct-seed in garden in spring for early greens, and for winter greens sow in August or September. Barely cover seed, tamp well and keep evenly moist until germination. thin to 6 inches apart.
