Yerba del Lobo (Helenium hoopesii) potted plant, organic

Family:  Aster (Asteraceae)

Hardy to Zones 4 to 8

(Owl’s Claws, Herb of the Wolf)   Native to the mountains of the American Pacific Northwest and Southwest, flowering to 2 feet tall.  Yerba del Lobo tends to grow in association with arnica, although it is much more robust than arnica, is taller, and tends to form denser clumps. Traditional external usage (TWM): counterirritant, anti-inflammatory.  Gardeners like the plant because it is an easy yearly florific display with long-lived flowers.  Plant prefers moist, regular garden soil and part shade to full sun.  Space plants 2 feet apart.

  1. Question

Growing question: I planted a yerba de lobo plant this spring from you guys and it’s not growing very much but it seems healthy. I have it in a large, deep pot in good neutral pH soil delivered from a nursery. I water it every evening. My regular soil is clay full of pasture grasses with long (6 feet to longer) fierce rhizomes. So I only plant tough plants in the ground. What do I need to do to give this plant what it needs? Or is it just establishing itself and its roots? What pH soil does it prefer? I live in Salem Oregon just east of the city. Thank you.
