(Lyon Leek) Leeks are excellent in stir-fries and soups, where they dissolve into a wonderfully tasty broth. Leeks prefer fertile, well-drained garden soil and full sun. Sow in flats in the greenhouse 60 days before the last frost and transplant out to garden when the robins reappear. Or, sow directly in the garden in early spring. Germ in 10 days. Space plants 4 inches apart. As the leeks develop, mound up soil around them, or mulch up the sides with straw or grass clippings, in order to promote development of the white yumminess.
