Hardy to zone 7 to 12, otherwise grown as a potted plant and brought in for the winter

(Lesser Galangal) Herbaceous perennial native to China.  Plants prefer sun to part shade and moist, well-drained soil.  The plant can be grown indoors or in a greenhouse in the temperate north, or outdoors in California, Gulf coast, HI, etc. Traditional usage of the fresh or dried rhizome:  TCM, one of the traditional chinese herbs that warms the middle burner.  A warming antibacterial used for treating dysentery and other infections.  Also an aromatic spice, lending an attractive cinnamon fragrance to scents and culinary dishes.  Grows well at elevation in the subtropics.  This species makes a small house plant, to 1 foot tall, with narrow, pointed leaves.  In ideal tropical conditions can reach up to 5 feet.  Space plants 2 feet apart.

I’ve been trying to grow galangal from organic rhizomes purchased from the local food co-ops with no success. Happy to find plants for sale at SM. They arrived on time and looking very healthy last autumn and have thrived during a long winter indoors in northern MN. I expect they will explode like the ginger and turmeric once they get out side.
