Galangal, Greater (Alpinia galanga) potted plant, organic

(8 customer reviews)

$11.00

Family:  Ginger (Zingiberaceae)

Hardy to zone 9 to 12, otherwise grown as a potted plant and brought in for the winter
Herbaceous perennial native to Asia.  Galangal is used as a cooking spice, mainly for curries and soups.  It has a ginger-like hotness but a sweetly aromatic flavor that is, actually, the predominant flavor in good “Tom-kha-kai” soup that many of you have probably tasted in Thai restaurants.  The root (rhizome, actually) also is the source of an essential oil used in flavoring.  The young shoots are edible and delicious.  Plants prefer warmth, fast-draining soil, part shade, and protection from frost.  Space plants 2 feet apart.

Potted plant, Certified Organically Grown

hello, we have provided directions saying that the plant is best potted up to a gallon upon receipt. San Jose is a Zone 9 and the monograph lists this as a zone 9 to 12, so it is barely winter hardy for you, mulch well, water frequently. richo

generally greater galangal is considered a soup herb and lesser galangal is a cinnamon-tasting medicinal herb that will yield to tea or decoction. This is a standard medicinal in TCM–you can get it in Chinatown. r

      Hi Liz,
The plants are in 5-inch-deep pots. They are nicely established growing plants in pots. They aren’t sold on the basis of root weight. if you buy one plant \you get one plant, and if you buy 3 plants you get 3 plants.

    Question

    Reasay Ros

Is there a difference between Greater Galangal and Lesser Galangal? I was wondering because you have both varieties. I was just hoping to purchase a galangal varietal that’s similar to the ones I get at the grocery store.

Hello Reasay, That would be the greater galangal. The lesser is more like ginger and cinnamon. The greater is more like what is used in tom-kha-khei soup. r

Very healthy plants arrived and have thrived indoors over the winter in northern MN. Can’t wait to get them outside in pots and watch them grow!

I’m leaving our beloved Oregon for Maui to start a pharm and apiary and plan to grow a variety of gingers (amongst other specialty) crops at farmers’ markets. Are these and the other types of ginger sold here adapted for tropical climates and good stock for propagation?

I bought one over a year ago. It was packed and shipped well. It’s really thriving. It’s a pretty dark green so decorative. I am in California so winters are mild. Even with some light frost several times over the winter it continues to do well! I haven’t harvested any of the root as yet, but am looking forward to doing so. I have it in a pot. Will probably buy the “Lesser Galangal” next as it is more potent for medicine and I make my own tinctures.
