Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis) potted tree, organic

(1 customer review)

$16.00

Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis)

Family:  Trumpet vine  (Bignoniaceae)

Hardy to zones 7 to 11

Deciduous shrub to small tree flowering reddish lavender to a maximum height of 40 feet, usually shorter.   Native to the deserts of southwestern US, Baja, and Mexico.  This plant is an indicator for subterranean water in the desert, and if it’s a good year for water, the large, trumpet-shaped flowers and associated sexy aroma can be exceptional.  After the leaves fall in the summer heat, the catalpa-like seedpods remain as dangling remembrances.  The leaves, bark and flowers have diverse medicinal activity (see Moore’s “Desert and Canyon West.”)  Traditional use (TWM):  anti-candida.  Tree prefers full sun, dry soils, and occasional watering.  These potted individuals are vigorous (and very, very cute.)  I suppose they could be kept indoors in a sandy-soiled pot, and they certainly grow fine in a greenhouse.  Protect from frost.

Hi Ginger, thanks for writing and for wanting this really rather incredible tree. I note that these are in standard pots so the height will be 8 inches more or less. I would like everyone to understand that we do not do cookie cutter propagation–we are likely to have different sizes available at the same price, we have a policy of shipping largest plant first, and the trees grow continuously so that if i listed a size right now, by the time it shipped the size would likely be quite different. Use the “customer comments” field at ordering to make special requests and we will try to oblige. Small potted stock like this really must be up-potted on receipt and grown on for a year or more before moving to landscape. 9 inch potted stock is more likely to be ready for immediate planting out–that pot size is indicative of larger plants and will cost significantly more. We’re just trying to get you a live starter plant, properly identified, with good life force. The rest is up to you. richo

hi caitlin, these are supposedly hardy down to zone 5 but one caveat they do need a sunny and dry position or they will go away in the winter. richo
