(Western Butterbur) Herbaceous perennial flowering white to 3 feet tall. Native to the Western US. The plant bears luxurious, umbrella-shaped leaves up to a foot across. Traditional use (TWM, Native American): Antitussive, pain relief, poultice to swellings, rheumatic joints. Contains low levels of pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Plant prefers gravelly soils, regular garden soils, and/or streamside habitat. Will take sun or shade. Easily grown from a root, just nestle the root into the surface of the soil with the rootlets going down the rhizome (the long, fat part) about half covered with soil. Keep watered until the root sends up leaves. After that, water occasionally. Space plants 1 foot apart.

Question
Dawn Kinzel (verified owner) –
Would you consider butterbur a “starchy” root? I have a friend looking into herbal pain relief for her son, but he’s on a Specific Carbohydrate Diet and can’t use starch.

I think it is starchy but I don’t think the starch would be found in the tincture.

Hi Sara, thanks for writing. Very similar to here, really, we’re in the foothills of the siskiyous. petasites loves that kind of place–best to plant streamside in the shade but will do ok in a regular shade garden situation. richo
