(Rooiwertel) Native to South Africa, a soft-leaved succulent, spineless, that resembles aloe. These do well in relatively low-light situations and flower in glorious yellow racemes several times a year. They are a fairly easy-to-grow rare plant for the apartment-bound plant lover or well-tooled enthusiast. Traditional usage (S. African traditional medicine): Burns, male enhancement. Prepare a fast-draining mix, sow seeds on surface, cover first with sharp sand, then with white pumice, water carefully so as not to dislodge seeds, keep warm and evenly moist until germination, which may take as long as 3 weeks. Note appearance of seedlings, macro shots in the gallery, the emergent seedlings poke up through 3/8 inch minus pumice. Work seedlings up in successively larger pots. Plant prefers fast-draining soil and takes very little water. For outdoor cultures, space plants 1 foot apart.
