Bulbine, Natal (Bulbine natalensis), packet of 10 seeds, organic

(1 customer review)

Family:  Asphodel (Asphodelaceae)

Hardy to Zones 10 to 12, commonly grown as a potted plant–will withstand light frost.

(Rooiwertel) Native to South Africa, a soft-leaved succulent, spineless, that resembles aloe.  These do well in relatively low-light situations and flower in glorious yellow racemes several times a year.  They are a fairly easy-to-grow rare plant for the apartment-bound plant lover or well-tooled enthusiast.  Traditional usage (S. African traditional medicine): Burns, male enhancement.  Sow seeds according to rules for aloe culture, which are described with illustrative text and photos at this link https://blog.strictlymedicinalseeds.com/starting-aloe-from-seed/

Prepare a fast-draining mix, sow seeds on surface, cover first with sharp sand, then with white pumice, water carefully so as not to dislodge seeds, keep warm and evenly moist until germination, which may take as long as 3 weeks.  Note appearance of seedlings, macro shots in the gallery, the emergent seedlings poke up through 3/8 inch minus pumice.  Work seedlings up in successively larger pots.  Plant prefers fast-draining soil and takes very little water. For outdoor cultures, space plants 1 foot apart.

Is this a bulbine natalensis seedling?

Hi Richo! After 3 weeks of waiting for the bulbine to sprout, three similar seedlings emerged. I’ve attached a photo of the largest one and was wondering if you can verify whether or not it is bulbine natalensis. I’ve looked all over the internet and couldn’t find any pictures of seedlings that were around my size as a match. If only three out of 10 grow, I’ll be happy with that! Thanks again for your service to nature and humanity.
