Skullcap (Scutellaria sp), unlike Plantain, presents many species that tend to have very diverse applications, from Mad-dog Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) that is considered to be a nervine tonic, to Baical Skullcap, the root of which is used in Chinese medicine to treat infection and dysentery. We try to carry as many of these as we can in seed form, and wish we could do more!
Among the aromatic perennials of the Mediterranean basin, Sages are among the most prolific and stridently aromatic. We carry pages of sages. Savory is equally dear to my heart, in my diet protective of same, and I admit to being a collector of these. Some people count their worth in gold, I secretly count mine in plants, believing that “(s)he who dies with the most plants wins.”
Rupturewort (Herniaria glabra) is my choice for oddball in this category. Honestly it is unique as a groundcover—there is really nothing else that covers dull ground and dulls sharp edges more effectively. The plant is densely leaved, spongy even, and running very close to the ground. They spread so happily that, if you play it right horticulturally, you can get by with planting only one!
