(Artemisia afra) Woody perennial from 3 to 6 feet tall, flowering yellow. Native to Ethiopia and all of southern Africa, occupying the seasonally dry tropical biome. The lacy foliage is showy. The plant exudes a pleasant aroma, especially when stroked. Native uses (TAM): Respiratory, gastrointestinal, and feverish complaints. Poulticed against ringworm, aches and pains. Leaves rolled and inserted in nose as a decongestant. Vermifuge. Insect repellant. Aromatic. Source of artemisia ketone and camphene. Despite negligible content of artemisinin, widely used to treat malaria. Plant prefers full sun and dryish soils. Standard garden soil is fine. Cut back in fall to improve overwintering and lush growth in spring. Space plants 3 feet apart.
