this varies according to root type and species and also according to maturity of the planting. the really good answer to this question is, “sufficiently sized to promote the continued vigor of the plant.” the other answer is starting at 3 inches and going up to 3 gallons. r

So, it’s best to plant by a stream…ie cool running water? Would it grow well in an area that stays moist and shady

Hello Auntie, It is true, one can grow watercress in moist soil in the shade to part sun. We often grow potted watercress for sale and this is really no different. r

I’m in really hot zone 9B with 100 ? plus temperatures and I am growing watercress using a drip system and keeping it watered deeply two times a day at five in the morning and evening so that it has time to dry out some before night. It’s doing great and I’m letting it flower and go to seed.

P.S. Forgot to mention, I have it where it gets morning sun and afternoon shade because of the heat
