(Field Thyme, Lemon Thyme) Evergreen creeping perennial native to temperate Europe, flowering mauve to 10 inches tall. Strongly-scented, citrusy groundcover preferring sandy soil or rockery in full sun. Extended flowering period from midsummer to frost, providing bees with nectar and providing herbalists with medicine and spice. Traditional uses (TWM): carminitive, antioxidant, treats multiple conditions from throat infection to general malaise, condiment spice and preservative. Plant prefers sun and the perfect drainage afforded by rockery, gravel or sand. Sow seeds in warm, light and moist conditions, just pressed into surface. Germination is rapid. Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart. They will spread and interlock.
For groundcover applications: Sow in flats and work up in small pots or plugs, then set out to 6 inches apart and a mat will soon form. To direct-seed, get the gram quantity and mix seed with sand to stretch it. Fill the cracks between pavers with sand and sprinkle the seeds on surface. Water daily until germination. The thyme will cover the cracks and become drought-tolerant as it matures and sends down its roots.
