(1 customer review)

$8.50$21.95

Hardy to Zones 4 to 9

Family: Spiderwort (Commelinaceae)

Showy monocot to 18 inches, native to Central US .  Bears conspicuous terminal clusters of purple flowers above thin, iris-like leaves.  Leaves edible, especially when cooked in soup.  Flowers delightfully candy-able.  Traditional usage:  TWM, urinary and uteral tonic, radiation burn.  Flowers very fragile and last only one day.  Stamens, normally colored purple, are sensitive to ionizing radiation and turn pink in the presence of nuclear fallout.  Plant prefers sandhill environment or standard garden culture, with lots of water but fast-draining soil and full sun.  Excellent in pots.  When planting in bedded culture, space 1 to 2 feet apart.

Potted plant, Certified Organically Grown

Its diminutive cousin, blue-eyed grass, also exhibits the quality of the stamens turning bright pink under radiative fallout. This was used by me to tell if we were getting fallout from Chernobyl. We were.
