Sage, Dan-shen miltiorrhiza (Salvia miltiorrhiza) potted plant, Organic

(3 customer reviews)

$8.50$21.95

Family:  Mint (Lamiaceae)

Hardy to zone 6 to 10, otherwise grown as a summer annual or overwintered indoors.

(Tan-shen or Dan-shen, Dan shen, Chinese Red Sage, sometimes misspelled multiorrhiza) Herbaceous perennial native to central and southern China to Vietnam.  This is the official species.  Traditional usage (TCM): circulation stimulant, antistroke, atherosclerosis, menstrual woes.  Source of the molecule known as tanshinone. Plant prefers garden soil, sun to part shade, and regular watering.  The herb itself is comely, with blue flowers that express for quite a long time during the summer, and red taproots, which are characteristic to the plant (and several other sages like it).  Excellent choice for herb gardens throughout the temperate north and a show plant for sure.  Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart.

Potted plant, Certified Organically Grown

Grew this from seed. Has come back year after year. Easy to propagate from division. I’m growing at altitude, 7,500’ in fairly harsh conditions. Drought, wind—zone runs 4 through 6b depending on weather.

Gorgeous plant! I got it about a month ago and it’s doing so well that I didn’t even transplant it yet, though I know I should. I am wondering how it will do as a strictly potted plant. We are in zone 6-7 (weird little microclimate here).

Richo — If I plant this outside in zone 6-7, will it survive and come back next season? Will it spread? Would it be better to keep it as a potted plant?

And thanks for your excellent packing of all the plants I ordered this season. The plants are all doing well.

I live in zone 7a in central Maryland. I purchased seeds about 3 years ago and they all germinated and have been thriving outside year round! Transplants well and produces a lot of beautiful purple flowers and plenty of small seeds. I highly recommend strictly medicinal seeds for your seeds and transplants!
