I live in zone 7a It is almost March. Do I put the seeds in the freezer for a few days before trying to start them indoors or should I just plant the seeds soon outside??

hi elfkin, the clary sage is a warm soil germinator, it doesn’t want a cold treatment. plant in the greenhouse or in the garden aftger soil warms up in spring. here’s what the monograph says: Sow seed in spring, in pots or directly in the garden. Barely cover seed with soil and tamp firmly, then keep moist and in the light until germination, which occurs in 1 to 2 weeks. Thin or transplant to 3 feet apart. Flowers in the second year in multiple upright stalks to 5 feet.

  2. Question

How does clary sage fair during the winter months? I am in zone 8B in central Texas. We have some mild winters and then we have some very cold winters. Is this a cold tolerant plant?

Hi Leslie! If you double-click on the photo you’re going to get the monograph that gives you the hardiness info. Clary sage is a biennial and overwinters in zones 5 to 9. You’re safe there! richo

This is a tremendous plant. It has really taken over its share of the garden…very tall and wide! Great fragrance, beautiful flowers. I got my packet from the Sage Seed Set a few years ago. Highly recommend.
