(Prairie Rose) Native to the Eastern US, this is a pretty wild thing, a deciduous shrub to 6 feet tall. Tends to fountain especially if planted near a fencepost–a natural barrier. Fragrant pink flowers are borne singly or in small clusters, long-lived, blooming throughout the summer, giving way to small, round, deep red hips. Traditional use (TWM, AmerIn): fruits edible when ripe and source of vit c, basically… rosehips. root very astringent and so the various water preparations have been used to stem bleeding, both external and internal. Space 6 feet apart.

Um, they do contain pectin but I am not sure how one would extract it. I believe it is due to pectin when they jellify their own mashed flesh if one can get it separated from the inner spiky pith.

Hi Crissy, I personally like Rosa rugosa best, as it has luscious flowers and oversize hips. You can hit waitlist on that, as we have stock we’re working up for sale. Probably sooner than that we’ll again have california wild roses, which would also grow in texas. here’s a link to that pone.
