Perennial in Zones 6 to 9

(Yellow Horned Poppy, Yellow-horned Poppy)

Native to the Mediterraean. Herbaceous perennial with large, bright yellow flowers that give way to elongated, beanpod-like follicles. Source of glaucine, a powerfully antitussive compound.  Plant prefers full sun and poor, dry soils or waste places.  Seed germinates best when given 30 to 90 days moist refrigeration, then planted in warm conditions.  Alternately, one can sow the seeds outdoors in the fall or early spring, with germination in the spring as the ground warms up.  Thin to 1 foot apart.
