Zones 6 to 10

(Western Butterbur) Herbaceous perennial flowering white to 3 feet tall.  Native to the Western US.  The plant bears turgid, deeply palmate leaves up to a foot across. Traditional use (TWM, TNAM):  Antitussive, pain relief, poultice to swellings, rheumatic joints.  Contains low levels of pyrrolizidine alkaloids.  Plant prefers gravelly soils, regular garden soils, and/or streamside habitat.  Will take sun or shade. Space plants 1 foot apart.

      hi jen, thanks for contacting, they are probably in a 4-inch-deep pot and 6 inches of growth. We may have to cut them back to ship. They remake leaves rapidly from the basal buds, richo

      Hi Carol, Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are a class of compounds that are commonly found in many common foods and different terrestrial plants including members of the Asteraceae and Boraginaceae. An overabundance of these in the diet can cause liver damage to susceptible individuals. People with normal liver function generally notice nothing from occasional ingestion. With a plant like petasites, that is used externallhy, presence of PAs is a nonissue.
