    Question

    Susan Groelle

I live in Zone 9a but would like to grow Peppermint. Should I bring it inside for the winter? Should I grow it in part shade? I had a Spearmint plant growing in morning and late afternoon sun with shade all afternoon. It was growing fine but made me sick when I had some with watermelon. I gave it to a friend and would like to replace it with a peppermint plant. I drink a lot of peppermint tea.

      Hi Susan,
Thanks for staying in touch. I like peppermint tea, too. In a Z 9a the peppermint actually will grow better in the winter outdoors and doesn’t need to be brought in. If you give it a moist location and some shade (dappled sunlight is best) then you can grow this quite successfully. Generally speaking peppermint is kind to the stomach and is well-tolerated.

Hi Cheryl, These grow in moist soil during the warmer times of year. They will grow sparsely in the shade next to a water feature, or densely in moist soil in full sun.
