(Red Flowered Herbaceous Peony, Cao-shao-yao) Herbaceous perennial. Native to China and Japan. This is a wild-derived strain of Peony found naturally in forests and forest margins in the mountain valleys of Hebei, Shaanxi, and several other Chinese and Japanes provinces. I find that these are a dependable show plant. The deeply palmate leaves are interesting, and the bright red single flowers with copiously yellow pollen-ed stamens are much anticipated, exclaimed over, and appreciated by bee, beast and human alike. This species is listed as a substitute to P. lactiflora and P veitchii as the source for chi-shao, Chinese Red Peony Root, one of the herbs that regulates the blood. Traditional usage (TCM): uterine maladies, pain, bleeding and traumatic injury. Not to be used during pregnancy. Sow seeds anytime in gallon pots, about an inch deep (the seeds are large). Germination is usually in the first spring after overwintering, but will sometimes take 2 years. Patience. Grow out in a gallon pot for a year before transplanting to garden. Space plants 3 feet apart. Grows 1.5 to 2 feet tall.
