( Yellow Peacock Flower, Mexican Holdback, Mexican Bird of Paradise, Tabachin del Monte ) Woody shrub to small tree native to Southern Texas, Mexico and Baja. Excellent potted specimen for heated greenhouse or may be grown outdoors in American SW, Southern California, Florida, Gulf Coast, Mexico, Subtropics, Tropics–any arid to semi-arid frost free zone worldwide. The bush blooms frequently and is quite ornamental. Traditional uses: Juice of the leaves is used as a febrifuge, the juice from the flowers is used externally against open lesions, and the seeds are used for treating upper respiratory problems. The root is considered abortifacient, so clearly not to be used during pregnancy.
