Palm, Desert Fan (Washingtonia filifera), packet of 10 seeds

$4.95

Family:  Palm (Aracaceae)

Hardy to Zones 9 to 12

(Desert Fan Palm) Perennial, evergreen palm native to Southern California, Arizona, and Mexico.  Growing in the full sun and alkaline soil of the proverbial desert oasis, the Fan Palm gives freely of its shade, date-like fruits, and immense leaves for the benefit of all beings.  This would include hummingbirds, coyotes, roadrunners and humans. Plant prefers full sun and deep, porous soils.  Soak seed in warm water for 3 days, changing water daily, then remove seeds from water and plant in cactus mix and keep warm and in the light until germination.  Transplant seedlings to individual pots and work up until sufficiently sized to transplant to the landscape at a spacing of at least 30 feet apart.  If living in more temperate areas, this tree can be grown in a pot and will size itself to the pot–I have a potted one that is over a decade old and not waist high.

10 seeds/pkt., Open Pollinated, Untreated, NO GMO’s

  1. Question

    Lydia

If this Washington palm is kept small in a large pot, will it still produce the fruit? Also how fast do these grow? And how many years old until they produce fruit? Thank you!!! Lydia

      Hello Lydia,
The fan palms don’t make fruit as small trees in pots. They need to be planted in the ground to do that, and it takes decades. Richo
