(Origanum vulgare hirtum) Herbaceous perennial native to the east Aegean islands, Cyprus, Crete, Greece and Turkey. Flowers white to a height of 2 feet. Spicy herb useful in flavoring pizza, sausages, eggs and other protein dishes. Traditional usage (TWM) antioxidant, carminative, disinfectant, anti-fungal. We do specialize in this particular cultivar, and we always grow sturdy plants from our own seed. We like them best among all the origanum and majorana. Plant prefers full sun to part shade and a fast-draining soil. Light-dependent germinator. Press firmly into surface of soil in early spring, in pots or directly into a fine seedbed in the garden. Average germ time 1 to 2 weeks. Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart.
