Lavender, French (Lavandula stoechas), potted plant, organic

$8.50$57.00

Family:  Mint (Lamiaceae)

Hardy to Zones 7 to 11

(Spanish Lavender, French Lavender) Woody perennial native to the Mediterranean, Spain and Morocco.  The densely-packed spikes rise to about 2 feet tall, tufted with purple, petal-like bracts.  They look to me like tiny sails set to the wind. Plants prefer full sun and a dry to mesic, well-drained soil.  Commonly grown in open fields or as landscape plants, mellowing the corners and curbs between buildings, driveways and sidewalks.  They are tough to the sun and should be trimmed back in the fall to prevent large amounts of snow from accumulating on them.   Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart.

Potted plant, certified organically grown

      Hi Bryttany,
We grew these from seed. It is difficult for me to guarantee what you will get, since there are orders in the pipe and you haven’t ordered yet. We have a policy of shipping largest stock first. What i know of these is that they are nicely sized-up seed grown individuals in their second year. Probably best to cut back at transplant. I just set a 100-foot row of these to field this summer and I’ve cut them back twice already–they are already medium size bushes–same stock. richo

      Hi Cheryl,
Thanks for staying in touch. The current stoechas are seedgrown and in their second year. The pot size may be variable-theh 5-inch-deep tree band pot is pretty standard to us. I planted a 100 foot bed of the same stock last year in the fall and they are now up to my knees in full flower. Really rather splendid. After researching lavender and finding that this landrace was the original type in use in early Mediterranean cultures, it has become my favorite lavender. Find out much more about it in “Growing Plant Medicine Vol 2.” All the best, richo oh, PS, tomorrow is the last day to order plants for fast turnaround.
