Herbaceous perennial to 16 inches tall, flowers blue with a yellow beard, to 16 inches tall. Native to the Balkan Peninsula of Southeastern Europe. Used historically (TWM) for treatment of headache and as a hot mash applied to boils. Cured rhizomes used in perfumery. Plant prefers sunny, well-drained soil of garden or rockery. Scarify seeds by rubbing on medium grit sandpaper and sow in fall or early spring. Best to sow in pots and keep cool, moist and shaded. Germination is in the spring. Space plants 2 feet apart.
