Family: Iris (Iridaceae)

Hardy to Zones 5 to 9

Herbaceous perennial to 16 inches tall, flowers blue with a yellow beard, to 16 inches tall.  Native to the Balkan Peninsula of Southeastern Europe. Used historically (TWM) for treatment of headache and as a hot mash applied to boils.  Cured rhizomes used in perfumery.  Plant prefers sunny, well-drained soil of garden or rockery. Scarify seeds by rubbing on medium grit sandpaper and sow in fall or early spring.  Best to sow in pots and keep cool, moist and shaded.  Germination is in the spring.  Further note:  careful record keeping in fall 2023 to spring 2024 revealed a 170 day germination period from planting to emergence.  Space plants 2 feet apart.

      Hello Somer,
      Thanks for contacting with a good question. The Illyrian Iris makes horizontally running rhizomes similar to the perhaps more familiar bearded iris. In careful propagation, rhizome cuttings are best made in the late summer or early spring. Winter cuttings often fail to root. Otherwise, to divide, once the plant is established, you can just cut the monocot leaves back to the crown, chunk out a division with a shovel and replant to a distance. See page 26 of “Growing Plant Medicine Vol 2.”
