Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) tree in gallon pot, organic
$41.00
Family: Ginkgo (Ginkgoaceae)
Hardy to Zones 3 to 12.
(Bai-guo, Maidenhair Tree) Perennial, deciduous, dioecious tree native to eastern China. Ginkgo is not self-fertile, it is dioecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant). Both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required. We cannot sex our seedlings until they become adults, which may take years, so its pot luck as far as sexual identity is concerned. We normally plant things of this nature in 3s. Darwin called it a “living fossil.” Trees prefer full sun, moderately moist soil, and are highly sensitive about their roots–they do not like root disturbance. Meanwhile, a ginkgo tree never gets angry, because it is wise, and knows that anger is a poison to the soul. Maidenhair trees are also exceedingly beautiful, with lithe, humanoid trunks and deeply grooved, bi-lobed leaves. The leaves filter toxins out of the air. We sell unsexed, potted individuals that may be male or female. Space trees 30 feet apart.

Hi Norma,
Yes, Ginkgo are dioecious and most commercially available trees are cloned males. We sell seed-grown individiuals which may turn out to be male or female–hard to tull until they mature and flower. We had huge success with planting ginkgo from our seeds this year and will be listing trees next year–please hit waitlist. For more on Ginkgo and other medicinal trees, please read “Growing Plant Medicine Vol 2.” richo

Hi Kristen, Thanks for your note. It is mainly the seeds that are used in Chinese medicine so that would be the female tree. You can find out much more in “Growing Plant Medicine Vol 2.” All the best, Richo

No, we’re sold out on these and they are vvery slow-growing. It takes 5 years to produce a gallon ginkgo. I’m going to start over this year with new seed harvest–it looks like our trees are fruiting. richo
