Geranium, Umcka (Pelargonium sidoides), packet of 5 seeds, organic
Family: Geranium (Geraniaceae)
Hardy to Zone 8 to 12, otherwise grown as a summer annual or potted plant, brought in for the winter
Evergreen mounding perennial native to South Africa. The plant smells great and is forgiving to the touch, a soft mound of leaves giving rise to a sparse crown of red-purple flowers spring through midsummer. The fleshy root is a traditional Zulu remedy for treating upper respiratory infections, including bronchitis, sinusitis, sore throat, colds, flu and tuberculosis (TB). New studies are showing a potent anti-HIV effect. Plant prefers full sun, moderate water and fertile soil. Sow seed just below soil surface and keep evenly moist until germ. Oscilating temperatures will encourage germination, which begins three weeks after planting, with ongoing germination for months thereafter. Work the plants up in successively larger pots and transplant to the open garden or field only after they are well established.
