Family:  Purslane (Portulaccaceae)

Hardy to Zones 7 to 11, otherwise grown as an annual or a potted plant.

(Tu-ren-shen) Native to the central and southern US and Central America—cultivated in China. The hot pink flowers of this succulent, mound-forming ground cover give way to rounded seedpods of bright cinnabar red. Traditional usage (TCM): tonifies the digestion, moistens the lungs and promotes breast milk. This drought resistant plant prefers full sun, rooting into poor soils, sand or gravel.  Sow in spring.  Sprinkle seed on prepared seedbed, work in shallowly with fingers, tamp securely and keep evenly moist until germination.  Thin or transplant to 6 inches apart.

In my greenhouse this seeds into other pots just enough that I always have the airy little flowers breezing around. If I’m going to have an issue with aphids, they always show on these first, and by pinching them back I can keep the aphids from running amuck.
