Elephant Tree, Fragrant (Bursera odorata/fagaroides) potted tree, organic

(4 customer reviews)

$40.00

Family:  Myrrh (Burseraceae)

Hardy to Zones 10 to 12, otherwise grown as a potted tree and kept indoors for the winter

(Torchwood Copal, Torote blanco, Fragrant Elephant Tree)  Woody perennial to 30 feet tall, native to Mexico.  Source of burnable copal resin, which exudes from any wound and dries in amber tears.  Rare in cultivation.  Excellent for bonsai. Swollen trunks with humanoid skin and the excellent aroma make this a favorite of collectors.  Bursera stay in leaf as long as they are being watered, and tend to go dormant when very dry.  The best cultivation scenario is to plant in very fast draining medium, allowing them to go dormant and dry in winter and watering frequently in the summer.  I have had these flower and go to seed in an unheated greenhouse in Zone 7.  The Bursera fagaroides we have for sale here are sturdy trees grown from seed, approximately 12 inches tall, several years old, rooted in 6 inch deep pots, as per photo.  Pot up to gallons on receipt.  Planted on the landscape in warm zones, space at least 15 feet apart.

Potted tree, certified organically grown

My first trip to Baja Sur was inspired by what I read about this tree. That trip was with Navaho woman studying native healing plants in 1992. I live in Vancouver, WA so knowing this tree can possibly be bonzaied makes me happy at the prospect of obtaining it. I grow many medicinal plants in my garden and can certainly find room for this unique tree. Can you tell me what time frame it will be back in stock? I sincerely hope the fires in your area spared you and Forest farm.as well as the beautiful Applegate Valley.

Hello! I meditate in the morning in one of the tropical greenhouses. It is quiet there, and the rock floor is good for yoga. I came out of my prayers for peace thinking about the Bursera fagaroides, which were not far from where I sat. I thought maybe the seeds were ready to pick, and thought I might list them on the website. They aren’t ready yet. Give me your full delivery address to my e-mail at and I’ll send you some seeds when they are ready. Although the mothers are large, all the little trees are sold out. Richo

Very elegant looking plant and fairly happy with us. We grow this tree indoors, and our cats love chewing the leaves and occasionally the new growth. I am thinking it’s not toxic to cats as the culprits are still alive and healthy. A cat-managed bonsai, if you will :)!

That is actually pretty funny. No, not toxic, although a bit high-end for felines, the myrrh-like properties should keep them free of parasites. r

      Hi Nina,
I never know quite what to think when people ask this. All mine are grown indoors in that I grow them in the greenhouse and protect from frost, and they thrive. But if you mean on a coffee table with no light, then no. And, in a bright window, not reliably.
