$3.95

The Family:  Amaranth (Amaranthaceae)

Annual.  90 to 120 days to maturity.

(Cockscomb, Celosia, Ji-guan-hua)  Pantropical.  The plant bears an outrageous, convoluted, crested, flowering comb of the color burgundy. Traditional usage (TCM): menstrual woes, dysentery, and hemorrhoids.  The plant prefers full sun and a well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Sow in the spring. Barely cover seed and keep warm and evenly moist until germination, which takes 3 to 5 days.  May be sown directly in the garden, or sow in flats.  If starting indoors, individuate to pots and grow for a few weeks before transplanting to garden.   Avoid rootbound conditions, or the plants will stunt. Transplant or thin to 18 inch centers, side dress with organic compost and provide regular watering. Flowers to 20 inches.
