Family:  Legume (Fabaceae)

Hardy to Zones 9 to 12, otherwise grown in potted culture and protected from frost

(Saint John’s Bread)  Very tough and drought resistant, dioecious, evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean and the Middle East, growing to 50 feet tall, with a wide spread of branches.    Female tree yields sweetly aromatic, honeycombed pods that are relished by stock, wildlife and hippies. Traditional usage (TWM): mouth sores, persistent cough. Plant prefers full sun and fast-draining soil.  Scarify seeds right through the seedcoat until the white endosperm appears.  Drop in just-boiled water and let stand overnight, then plant in the morning in fast-draining mix and keep warm and in the light until germination.  Water only when the surface becomes dry.  Outdoor plantings should be spaced at least 60 feet apart.

Are these carob trees the type that produce a pod which contains an edible pulp?
