Family:  Pepper (Piperaceae)

Hardy to Zone 10 to 12, commonly grown as a summer annual or potted plant.  Protect from frost.  Fine in pots, bring in for winter.

(Lolot Pepper, Wild Pepper, Kadok, Chabei, Wild Betel) Evergreen, creeping perennial native to India, SE Asia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia.   The shiny, heart-shaped leaves lend a tropical touch.  They are aromatic and tasty, commonly used in local cuisine, as a salad ingredient, raw green wrapper, in soups of stir-fried.  Traditional usage (SE Asia): digestive.  Plant prefers potted culture in warm shade–rich soil and plenty of water.
