Angel Trumpet Tree (Brugmansia sanguinea) packet of 5 seeds
$4.95
Family: Nightshade (Solanacea)
Hardy to Zones 10 to 12 (may overwinter in Zones 8 and 9 with protection, otherwise grown as a potted plant and brought indoors for the winter)
(Tree Datura, Eagle Tree, Red Angel’s Trumpet Tree) Perennial bush to small tree to 16 feet, flowering in very large, showy corollas that dangle, yellow at base, blushing to crimson at the bell, a high-altitude plant endemic to the Columbian and Chilean Andes at an elevation of 6 to 9,000 feet. These are commonly grown in gardens throughout the US and thrive particularly well in maritime California. Check for instance Golden Gate Park, where splendid specimens may be found. Plant is used in shamanic ceremony and should never be ingested–source of tropane alkaloids. Plant prefers rich, deeply-spaded garden soil in the sun to part shade and thrives as a potted plant. These seeds are very good germinators. Plant in fast-draining medium in very warm conditions. Germination takes 2 to 4 weeks. Individuate, plant to larger pots, and keep warm and partially shaded. Acclimatize gradually to outdoor conditions. Space plants 12 feet apart.
5 seeds per packet, open-pollinated, untreated, no gmo’s

Do these like to be on the drier side prior to germinating like datura?

Hi Steph, thanks for opening a discussion about this seed. I find them somewhat formidable. Actually they do best when soaked overnight before planting. Use willow water or kelp tea–they are GA3 dependent. IRdo get what you mean about a dryish medium, though. They tend to glom out if too wet. Once planted, try not to overwater. See page 119 of “Growing Plant Medicine Vol 2” richo

Thanks Richo. I planted them last week straight into a cactus mix. Would watering them with kelp tea do them good at this point?

Seedlings are looking healthy, planted some of these seeds 3 weeks ago and nearing 100% germination, with one dying from damping off (my fault) and just a couple more that haven’t germinated yet. One thing that is important to note is that even if you remove the outer seed husk (which i recommend doing with any brugmansia seed) they may still need help with removal of the seed shell as they will sometimes rot before germinating completely

Just want to add a note that the plants from this seed stock seem to be more tolerant of direct sun than other sanguineas i’ve grown from other sources

I have been a hobbiest growing Datura and Brugmansia for years. I have never had a species plant of sanguinea and so I decided to order seeds from Strictly Medicinal as I have been pleased with everything that I have gotten from them. The seeds arrived clean and perfect and I planted them and got a 100% germination rate. Now here is where the fun starts. I planted all the seeds on the same day, in the same medium and have given them the same care but one of them has completely gone mad! It is better than four times the size of its closest sibling, not that any of them are doing poorly. But this plant is easily 24″ tall and just as wide and is growing daily. I have already up-potted it three times. I will attach a photo showing the large plant today at 2 1/2 months. On the left in the shot, you will see one of the other plants from the same batch. This has been one of the most fun groups of plants to grow in a long life of horticulture. I cannot recommend these seeds and Strictly Medicinal highly enough!
