(Yellow Wolf’s Bane) Herbaceous perennial native to northern Europe and Asia, flowering pale yellow to a height of 3 feet.  Deeply lobed shiny green foliage gives forth tresses of hooded flowers that may be cut back for another show.   Plant prefers damp, shade garden or woodlands and grows well in clay and calcareous soils.  Deer do not touch this plant. Sow seeds in summer to fall for germination the following spring, or give the flat 2 weeks of warm temperatures, then set in cold outdoor conditions, with germination in 3 to 5 months.  Aconite are known as “frost germinators” and do not germinate well in greenhouse conditions–use the outdoor technique.  Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart.
