Madrone, Pacific (Arbutus menziesii), tree in a 9″ pot, organic

$21.00

Family:  Heath (Ericaceae)

Hardy to Zones 7-9.

(Madrona) Evergreen hardwood to 60 feet, sometimes taller, flowering in spring with luscious, fragrant, urn-shaped flowers that give way to clusters of red berries in fall.  A favorite of migratory birds.  Native to the west coast from BC to California, with the greatest concentration in the Siskiyou Mountains of Southern Oregon.  The most distinctive feature is the peel-away bark that exposes the humanoid epidermis below.  Berries edible.  May be strung as necklaces when fresh, drying down to strings of hard, deep-red globes that can be consumed if one becomes hungry enough.  Edible jewelry as it were.  Traditional uses (TNAM): astringent tea from bark used to treat sores and ulcers.  Papery bark can be used as paper for writing.  Excellent firewood.  The trees prefer sun to part shade and rocky, infertile, well-drained soils.  Space trees 30 feet apart.

Potted tree,  certified organically grown
