Family: Cucurbit (Cucurbitaceae)
Annual, 50 days to fruits
(Lemon Cucumber) Annual vine making round fruits in legion, the lemon cuke is best consumed when young and thin skinned, being one of the freshest tastes of summer. Very low in cucumber bitters (the bitter glycoside cucurbitacin), this is an extremely healthy and easy-to-grow, highly productive summer food that can be planted in planters in Chicago or fields in Vermont or in the garden in Texas or on the West coast in Bandon–it prospers! Hint: rub on clean cloth or t-shirt to remove spines. Thirst quenching. This is agood, compact type to grow in greenhouse culture, in a kid’s garden, or in the family vegetable garden. The flower is almost as lemony as a lemon! Basic good advice for outdoor gardeners of cucumbers: Make a rich hill in the full sun in a place where the plant will easily be watered. Make hills at least 4 feet apart. Push 7 seeds into the hill, about 1 inch deep, and water well. If it is sunny and warm, the seeds will come up in about 5 days. Thin to 3 best seedlings per hill. You can let them sprawl, or give a circle of fencing for them to climb on. Harvest early and eat with a grin.

A lot of folks I know have a hard time getting their cucumber plants to really take off. These babies were quick to germinate and are fast growers. We’re starting to see a lot of flowers on our lemon cucumber plants, and it makes my mouth water just thinking about the cukes that will form! People always ask me why my garden is so lush and abundant, and the truth is I only buy Strictly Medicinal seeds, I follow Richo’s growing instructions, and I shower my plants with love and gratitude.
