$3.95 – $12.00
Family: Waterleaf (Hydrophyllacea)
Hardy to Zones 7 to 10
Erect, branching, evergreen shrub flowering to 6 feet tall, native to California and Southern Oregon. The long, lance-shaped leaves of this plant are coated with aromatic resin, making them sticky and shiny. They make a great offering when burned, and in fact the plant has much kharma with burning, as it likes to populate burned lands and the seed germinates best after a fire. Traditional usage of dried leaves (American Indian, TWM): cough, upper respiratory infection. The flowers are beautiful, purple/lavender tubes 1/2 inch long, ocurring in clusters at the top of the stems in the months of April through June. These nectarific flowers are adored by bees and other native pollinators. Plant prefers full sun and moderately fertile, slightly acidic soils, being most commonly found in dried waterways, rocky outcrops and trailside on south or east facing slopes. The plant is capable of producing offspring at a distance of up to 10 feet by means of underground runners, although this is likely to occur only where the plant is very well established. If spreading is not desired, restrict the roots. Yerba Santa can be a show plant for the herbal garden or botanical garden. Soak seeds overnight in willow tea, then plop little pinches of then down on surface of sandy soil in a flat and press in firmly, then keep warm and in the light and water only when the surface becomes dry, until germination occurs, which takes about 17 days. Individuate seedlings, pot up to larger pots and grow out for a year before transplanting to landscape. Space plants 3 feet apart.
