(Prairie Dock) Herbaceous perennial prairie dweller native to the eastern US. The creamy-white umbels are very long-lasting, on a stout and handsome plant to 3 feet tall. Fine showplant for medicinal herb garden or prairie restoration site. Traditional usage (American Indian, TWM): burns, intermittent fevers. Plant prefers full sun and rich soil of garden or grassland. Sow seed in fall or early spring. This tap rooted plant will benefit from direct seeding, or if using pots, choose deep pots and transplant before the seedlings get rootbound. Seed benefits from a period of cold, moist conditioning prior to germinating in warm conditions. This may be provided by planting the seed outdoors, or by giving 30 to 90 days cold, moist refrigeration before planting. Space plants 2 feet apart.
