Family: Cucurbit (Cucurbitacea)

Annual, 90-105 days to maturity

(Sugar Baby Watermelon) Vine bearing small, round fruits weighing 3 to 5 lbs. This is striped sugar baby, not the solid green kind, and it is a vigorous plant, resistant to fusarium wilt.  This is a good choice for sandy and fertile soils at the outer edge of the sprinkler–they do not need too much water when growing, and they like a very warm exposure.  When preparing the hill, unless the soil is already sandy, add sand and compost.  Space hills 6 feet apart and train vines into clear garden areas where they can fruit in peace.  Sugar babies are nice for this because they do not make as extensive or large a vine as other watermelons–they are the best choice for small gardens.  We direct-seeded our patch on May 15th during a hot spell, thinned to 3 plants per hill, and harvested an average of 2 watermelons per vine starting on August 20th, a 105 day maturation period.  If you thunk the side of the melon, it should sound hollow when ready to harvest.  One sure sign of readiness is when the stem dries up. The fruit is light red and the seeds are numerous and dark.  The flavor is exquisite, and they are very sweet, sweeter than most melons.
