Vervain, Blue (Verbena hastata) seeds, Organic

$3.95$44.10

Family:  Vervain (Verbenaceae)

Hardy to Zones 3 to 7

(American Blue Vervain, Swamp Verbena) Upright yet creeping, self-seeding herbaceous perennial native to the Eastern US.  Bright blue flowers on reddish-tinted plants, in multiple, long-lasting, handsome spikes from 3 to 5 feet tall.  Fresh or dried leaf is the part used.  Traditional usage: indigestion, colds, and fevers.  A good ingredient for home brew, it is also a traditional offering plant to honor the garden spirits.  Plants prefer full sun to part shade and moist garden soils.  Good drainage is not a necessary prerequisite.  If there is a concern that the plant will spread, then keep it in a pot, or provide other suitable barriers, and cut back the flowers after peak display.  Sow in the early spring or give 2 weeks cold conditioning by putting seeds in moist medium in a plastic bag in the fridge (not freezer) and then sow in warm soil.  Barely cover and tamp.  Germ in 2 to 4 weeks.  Space plants 2 feet apart.       .

I didn’t pay attention to zones when I ordered. Are there any tips that might allow it to grow in 8b? My person is one of the “stiff-necked overachieving list makers” for whom it’s recommended

Hello! What is considered early Spring in Salem, Massachusetts? To direct sow. Or could start in pots indoors if needed. Trying to grow Artemisia vulgaris, Trifolium pretense, Hyoscyamus niger, Chamaemelum nobile, Datura stramonium, Verbena hastata. I only have a large balcony with a 6x2x3 raised bed and some other large planters. No yard. Do you think the planter could fit maybe two or three of those and then the others in the large planters?

hi steph, the blue vervain is frustratingly slow from seed and cold conditions are important–that one could be planted now in the planter or in a pot. the rest would do fine planting in April in your area. I would make the planter work for all of them, triangulating at about 6 inches. r

him aryanne, thanks for getting in touch. seeds can be stored in their paper packet in a sealed glass jar in the fridge. most types last for years that way. the blue vervain lasts for decades that way. some seeds are short-lived and need to be planted immediately. packet instructions are specific to the seeds inside and will let you know if the seeds are short-lived. r

Can V. urticifolia be used interchangeably with V. hastasa? I planted V. hastasa a few years ago and it died. Surprisingly, V. urticifolia has emerged in its place. No one planted it it there!
