Family: Nightshade (Solanaceae)
Hardy to Zones 8 to 12, may act like an herbaceous perennial if knocked back by frost. Otherwise grown as an annual, 60 days to harvest.
(Tree Tobacco) Originally from Argentina and Bolivia, this woody perennial grows to 6 feet tall. It is now widely naturalized in dry, desert areas around the globe. The bright yellow, long-tubed flowers are striking. Traditional usage (Mexican and American Indian): Wounds, skin infections, botfly. Source of anabasine. Tree prefers sun and dryish soils. Strew seed on surface of fast-draining soil in spring, press in firmly and keep evenly moist and in the light until germination, which occurs in 2 to 3 weeks. Space plants at least 3 feet apart, these can grow quite large.
