Family:  Goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae)

Annual.  50 to 60 days to maturity.

Showy annual native to E Asia and India, flowering to 7 feet tall.  Yellow or green dye plant.  Stems used for bean trellis, or whimsically, as walking sticks.  The young growth, colored magenta, is collected and steamed as a tasty vegetable.  The plant prefers sun and moist soils of average fertility and is a good choice for marginal soils.  in the spring, scatter seed on a prepared seedbed, barely cover and tamp.  Keep warm and moist.  Thin to 6 inches apart.

    Does this have a nutty taste like Lambs Quarters? Also, does it need support for the wind? Contemplating a spot to grow these. Want to put them out to get stratified.
