Speedwell, Common (Veronica officinalis), packet of 30 seeds, organic
$3.95
Family: Figwort (Scrophulariaceae)
Hardy to Zones 3 to 7
Perennial creeper native to Eurasia. A good choice as a ground cover in herbal gardens, the speedwell will grow in almost any soil, in shade to full sun. The plant makes a good groundcover under trees, and drapes admirably over rocks. The pale blue flowers give way to seedpods that are inverted hearts. The seed is flattened and orange, like tiny gold doubloons. Traditional use: considered to contain great virtue as an alterative and urinary and upper respiratory tonic. Although the plant has largely fallen out of use, herbies are beginning to understand it and employ it once again. Our knowledge expands with our plant base. The plant will take sun to shade and is not picky about soil type, although a soil of adequate moisture is a must. Press seeds into soil surface and keep evenly moist until germination, then work up in pots until sufficiently sized to withstand the rigors of the landscape. Space 6 inches to one foot apart The plants will spread to form a cushy mat.
