$7.00 – $36.00
Family: Lily (Liliaceae)
Hardy to Zones 3 to 9
(Great Solomon’s Seal, Greater Solomon’s Seal) Herbaceous perennial forest dweller native to the Eastern States and Canada, distinguished from look-alikes by its large size and flowers drooping in pairs from the leaf axils that occur below the sweeping arm of the plant. Traditional usage: TWM, joint pain/arthritis. True Solomon’s Seal grows at the ground surface and prefers shade garden or open woodlands, especially in association with rock outcroppings. Root restriction is relished. Rake away mulch from planting site, situate roots horizontally with bud angled up about 1 inch below soil surface. Cover back up with mulch. Space 1 foot apart.

I hope this is the right spot for this. Just wondering if y’all are sold out if these, or if they’re just not available for order yet. Thanks!

Question
Gloria E –
Will you be selling these plants this year or only live roots in the fall. Mine did not come up this year. I’m not sure if they got hit by our early hot spring & not enough shade. Thanks!

Hi Gloria,
Thanks for writing. Seriously, keep a sharp eye on that spot. These are well-known for spending a year or more making roots without aerials, then coming on strong. We can’t sell Solomon’s Seal as a potted plant, they are just too tender to ship.

When will this be available again? Is there a wait list?

Hi Diana, I don’t see a waitlist option for some reason. However it would be premature–these will start shipping in September of 2024. Please check back then, we have lots of them, they won’t run out right away. richo

Question
Elena Esparza –
Greetings, Do you think Solomon’s Seal would grow in Los Angeles, CA? I have many shady places under our citrus trees and avocado trees as well as Banana trees.

Hello Elena, Thanks for writing. Solomon’s seal is shockingly adaptive. I’ve seen it growing in the Gila wilderness and wouldn’t be surprised to see it growing in the shade in LA. It usually takes at least a year to recover from transplant. We generally list these for sale starting in September. all the best, richo

Donna –
I would love to order Solomon’s Seal live root. However, it’s December here in Massachusetts. How would I store until Spring planting?

Hi Donna, My general advice on this is to plant to a gallon pot, mulch heavily and leave outdoors in a protected place. we will shut down shipping on this tomorrow, its cold here, too! richo

Hi Richo. Wondering when this live root will be available again. Thanks!

Hello Somer, Live roots start shipping in September and end shipping in December. Normally we sell “live root” species as potted plants from April through August, but Solomon’s Seal stems are so fragile that they tend to break in transit, so we don’t sell them that way, richo

Hi Richo, Thank you for making all of these plants available. I ordered some of the solomon’s seal live roots year before last and surprisingly i didnt see any of them make shoots or plants last year. I planted some in the garden and kept some in the greenhouse in pots to see what they would do up close. Do you think I might get surprised by them this year? Do they sometimes take a while to come out?

Hi Earthrich, thanks for writing. Yes, they are in there, alive. First year they sleep, second year they creep, third they leap. It is. . . the nature of the beast. richo
